About the museum
The museum is housed in the palazzo built by Camillo Bargellini between 1638 and 1658 to a design by the architect Bartolomeo Provaglia, who gave up the traditional portico in order to emphasise the mass of the building. The portal is flanked by two stone telamons by Gabriele Brunelli and his pupil Francesco Agnesini; around 1730 Vincenzo Bargellini had the staircase built, designed by Carlo Francesco Dotti.
The museum was founded at the beginning of the 1920s on the initiative of Francesco Malaguzzi Valeri, then superintendent of galleries, and it largely keeps its original arrangement, conceived as a Bolognese apartment of the eighteenth century, with furniture, furnishings and rare objects distributed over seven rooms.
The collections include the Davia Bargellini picture collection, with works by Vitale da Bologna, Simone dei Crocefissi, Innocenzo da Imola and Jacopo di Paolo, and a collection of applied arts that includes a puppet theatre and a miniature reproduction of an eighteenth-century private house.
