About the museum

Casa Cavassa is a Renaissance palace in the historic centre of Saluzzo, linked to the Cavassa family, originally from Carmagnola. Galeazzo Cavassa moved to the marquisate at the invitation of Marquis Ludovico II and in 1464 was appointed vicar general; the post later passed to his son Francesco, under whom the residence reached its greatest splendour. The marble portal and the carved wooden door date from the years 1518 to 1528.

In 1883 the palace was bought by Marquis Emanuele Tapparelli d’Azeglio, a diplomat and collector, who restored it in the 19th-century taste for “stylistic completion” and furnished it with antique furniture and objects of the 15th and 16th centuries. On his death in 1888 he left the building to the Comune di Saluzzo so that it could become a museum; the house opened to the public in 1890.

The route runs through fifteen rooms with painted wooden ceilings and decorated walls. In the inner loggia are the monochrome panels with the Labours of Hercules by Hans Clemer (1506–1511); among the best-known pieces are the altarpiece of the Madonna della Misericordia by the same artist (1498–1499), the late Gothic wooden choir from the marquis’s chapel in Revello, and the polyptych of the Adoration of the Magi by Jacobino Longo (1530).
