About the museum

The museum originated from the bequest of the violinist Teresa Milanollo, who died in Paris in 1904 and gave her native town numerous memorabilia of her own career and that of her sister Maria. It opened on 1 June 1913. After the Second World War the collections were enlarged with local holdings and relics linked to the history of the town; in 1949 Professor Antonino Olmo became honorary director and identified the former Franciscan convent as its seat, whose foundation stone had been laid on 13 July 1661.

The new museum was inaugurated on 31 May 1970 in the former convent of San Francesco, in the historic centre of Savigliano. In 1972 Elena Cravero Calandra gave the town the plaster casts, reproductions, studies and sketches of her father Davide Calandra, on condition that they be placed in a venue suitable for public use: the former convent church thus became the Gipsoteca, which opened on 21 June 1973. In 1998, ten years after Olmo's death, the museum was named after him.

The route runs over two floors: on the ground floor the urban history of Savigliano, the lapidarium with archaeological finds, the Lombard tombstone of the presbyter Gudiris and the old pharmacy of the SS. Annunziata hospital; on the upper floor the civic art collection from the 16th to the 18th century, the Pensa di Marsaglia donation, the Attilio Bonino donation, works of the 20th century and memorabilia of illustrious people from Savigliano. The visit ends with the cloister with frescoed lunettes from the early 18th century and the former refectory, which hosts exhibitions. The plaster cast gallery displays around one hundred works, including models and sketches in plaster, terracotta and clay, such as the cast of the frieze of the Aula di Montecitorio and that of the monument to Umberto I in Rome.
