About the museum
The museum is set up in the farmhouse to which the Cervi family, sharecroppers, moved in 1934. In the early 1930s the Cervi made important choices both in the running of their fields and in their anti-fascist outlook. In December 1943 Genoeffa and Alcide's seven sons were shot in reprisal, together with Quarto Camurri, and their story immediately took on strong symbolic value. During the war the house had been a point of reference and support for anti-fascists and draft evaders.
After the war the house became a place of pilgrimage for those who identified with the values of anti-fascism and democracy. Through a spontaneous process of transformation it became the “Museo per la storia dei movimenti contadini, dell'antifascismo e della Resistenza nelle campagne” (Museum of the History of Peasant Movements, Anti-Fascism and the Resistance in the Countryside), built from the collection of objects, prints, manuscripts, awards, albums, memorabilia and works of art kept by the family or donated later. The current route is the result of the rearrangement at the start of the 2000s, which made the whole historic house accessible.
The visit route is divided into three sections: “Il lavoro contadino” (Peasant Work), “L'antifascismo e la Resistenza” (Anti-Fascism and the Resistance) and “Una famiglia nella memoria” (A Family in Memory). Farm tools coexist with multimedia installations, such as the Quadrisfera, active since 2005, and the room “Cammini della Memoria” (Paths of Memory), linked to the portal Memorieincammino.it. The museum is run by the Istituto Alcide Cervi, which promotes research, educational activities and remembrance initiatives.
