About the museum
The house in Castellania where Fausto Coppi lived dates from the mid-19th century and was bought by his father, Domenico, after the First World War. On 2 January 2000 it reopened as a museum house, on the initiative of Massimo Merlano, president of the Consorzio Turistico “Terre di Fausto Coppi”, under the patronage of the Piedmont Region and in collaboration with the Gazzetta dello Sport.
The route reveals the more private side of the champion, who even at the height of his fame returned to the village to be with his family and old friends. Visitors pass through the entrance where Coppi trained on rollers during the long Piedmontese winters, the small room that tells how the family let him race on a bicycle instead of working as an errand boy in a delicatessen, and the rooms of the Coppi brothers, before reaching Casa Cavanna, a tribute to the inseparable blind masseur who discovered and followed the rider throughout his career.
In some of the rooms devoted to him, the museum also keeps a collection of documents, images, films, newspapers, memorabilia and curiosities. Every year fans from all over the world gather in Castellania to pay tribute to the “Campionissimo”, a figure who for many enthusiasts represents cycling’s golden age.
