About the museum
The studio was built by the painter in 1888 behind his house in Volpedo, along Via Rosano, and was enlarged until it took on its present form in 1896, with the large skylight in the roof. It was donated to the Municipality of Volpedo by Pellizza’s two daughters in 1966; a restoration carried out between 1986 and 1994 returned it to its original condition, and since June 1994 it has been open to the public.
The room measures about 6.50 × 8.25 metres, with a height of 5.5 metres. The walls have regained the warm earth tone of raw sienna (terra di Siena) chosen by the painter and keep the architectural band he painted as a false frame. The large canvases such as Fiumana and Il Quarto Stato were moved in and out through the double door and the window above it, using a pulley.
Among the objects on display are the early self-portrait of 1885, the Portrait of his sister Antonietta of 1890, colour studies, and two large tracing papers (veline) with figure drawings for Il Quarto Stato, on loan from a nephew of the artist. The Associazione Pellizza da Volpedo organizes the openings together with volunteers.
