About the museum

The educational museum opened on 1 May 2002 and is dedicated to the life and work of the painter Giuseppe Pellizza da Volpedo. It is located in the Palazzo del Torraglio, in Piazza Quarto Stato, in the oldest part of the village, opposite the Palazzo Malaspina. The scientific project is by Professor Aurora Scotti, the exhibition design by the architect Dario Milanese.

The Torraglio stands on a small hill above the Curone stream and has over time housed the town hall, a school and the carabinieri barracks. The restoration of the building was promoted by the Comune, with support from the Region of Piedmont, while the displays were funded by the Fondazione Cassa di risparmio di Tortona.

The route occupies six rooms on the ground floor and presents panels, photographs, documents and objects. It reconstructs the artist’s family and biography, the shift from realism to symbolism, and the cycles devoted to love and nature, and it tells the long development of “Processione” and “Quarto Stato”, which took about ten years. Technical sections explain pigments, supports, canvas and frame preparation, with the results of non-invasive analyses and the geometric diagrams of the composition.
