About the museum
Casa Ariosto is the house where the author of the Orlando furioso spent the last years of his life, from 1529 to 1533. The poet bought it in 1526, after three years as governor of the Garfagnana, in order to retire to a quiet domestic setting.
The building, square in plan and with precise mathematical proportions between its interior and exterior spaces, departs from the models of Ferrarese houses of the time. The arrangement of the fireplaces on the upper floor, on the side opposite the street front, and the space reserved for the large hall are innovative. On the façade a band of terracotta bears the Latin inscription wanted by Ariosto, which states that the house is small but suited to him, free of rents and bought with his own money.
The rooms of the noble floor today house a historical and evocative reconstruction of the display created for the Ariostean centenaries of 1875 and 1933, with memorabilia and fine editions of the poet’s works.
