About the museum
The Casa Museo Remo Brindisi is at Lido di Spina, in the municipality of Comacchio. It was wanted by the painter Remo Brindisi as a place to live, work and exhibit his collection, open to all; for this reason it is also known as the “Museo Alternativo” (Alternative Museum). The building was designed and built between 1967 and 1971 together with his friend, the Milanese architect Nanda Vigo, and opened in 1973.
The architecture is a white building with a large central cylinder running through the floors and the exhibition spaces, a spiral staircase and wide mirrored walls. Light and transparent materials play a central role in creating spaces to explore. The works, the structure and the furnishings are conceived as a single whole, following the idea of integrating arts, design and architecture shared by the artist and the architect.
The collection comprises about 1,100 works chosen by Brindisi to document his own time, displayed without chronological or hierarchical criteria. The sections range from works of civic commitment and irony in the games room on the basement level, to geometric abstraction, pop art and Nouveau Réalisme, through to calligraphy and matter, surrealism and art brut, along with the artist's studio. Among the artists represented are Giorgio De Chirico and Arturo Martini. The museum is run by the Municipality of Comacchio.
