About the museum
The birthplace of the poet Vincenzo Monti stands just outside the built-up area of Alfonsine and dates from the mid-18th century. It was built by Fedele Maria Monti, the poet's father, and Vincenzo was born there in 1754. From the outside it looks like a two-storey farmhouse, with numerous commemorative plaques on its walls.
The house enjoyed a first moment of splendour in 1928, for the centenary of Monti's death, and it survived the Second World War almost intact, although that war destroyed much of Alfonsine. In 1978, 150 years after the poet's death, it was refurbished on the initiative of the industrialist Marino Marini. The fitting-out of the Museo Montiano was completed in 1998, and the museum opened on 23 May of that year with the display of almost all of Monti's autograph works.
Today the Museo Montiano occupies the upper floor and is arranged in three rooms: the Sala della culla (Cradle Room), with period furniture; the Sala dei documenti (Documents Room), with rare first editions; and the Saletta Montiana (Little Montian Room), with an 18th-century marble bust, mementoes and autographs of the poet and of his daughter Costanza. On the ground floor are the offices of the CEAS, the sustainability education centre of the Bassa Romagna, and the visitor centre of the Riserva naturale speciale di Alfonsine (Alfonsine Special Nature Reserve), with a video room and panels on flora and fauna.
