About the museum
The Museo Delta Antico opened on 25 March 2017 thanks to the collaboration between the Comune di Comacchio, the Soprintendenza (heritage authority), the Polo museale dell’Emilia-Romagna and the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Ferrara. It inherits the collection of the Museo del carico della nave romana (Museum of the Roman Ship’s Cargo, 2001-2016), linked to the Valle Ponti wreck, and expands it with unpublished finds from the area, in a continuous sequence from the Bronze Age to the modern period.
The museum occupies the former hospital of Comacchio, a neoclassical 18th-century building near the Trepponti, in the centre of town. The exhibition route covers more than 1,200 square metres and combines the large spaces of the building with references to the territory, such as water, sand and wood.
The sections tell the story of the Etruscan city of Spina, the Romans in the Delta, the cargo of the Roman ship, Comacchio in the Middle Ages and an outdoor area. The museum also offers an olfactory route and a tactile bench, and receives more than 20,000 visitors a year.
