About the museum
The house stands at Roncole Verdi, a hamlet of Busseto, and was an inn that also sold basic necessities. In 1781 Giuseppe Antonio Verdi and his wife Francesca rented it; the inn was on the ground floor, and the family lived on the upper floor. After his death his son Carlo ran it, and in 1805 Carlo married Luigia Uttini. On the evening of 10 October 1813 Luigia gave birth to Giuseppe Verdi there.
In 1821 his father gave the boy a second-hand spinet, on which he practised in his first years of study. In 1872 the marquises Pallavicino, owners of the building, placed the first commemorative plaque and undertook not to alter the house; in 1913, for the centenary of his birth, a bronze bust was placed in the garden. The building was later declared a national monument and turned into a house museum; after a first intervention in 2001, it was consolidated and restored in 2013–2014, with the reconstruction of some furnishings probably lost and the use of multimedia tools.
The route runs through about ten rooms over two floors. On the ground floor are the entrance stable, the cellar, the old kitchen and the rooms of the inn; on the first floor the birth room, the spinet room, the spinning room, the lightning room and the commemorative room with documents about the composer.
