Temporarily closed
Temporarily closed. The villa has been closed to the public since 2022 and is in a state of decay. The State has begun the acquisition with the aim of making it a museum; the restoration, funded with €6.5 million, has not yet begun and no reopening date has been announced.

About the museum

On 1 May 1848 Giuseppe Verdi bought the Sant’Agata estate, of about one hundred hectares, on the advice of his father. From 1851 it became his main home, shared with Giuseppina Strepponi; in 1857 the manor house was completely renovated. Here the composer wrote many of his works, among them “La traviata”, “Il trovatore”, “Aida”, “Otello” and “Falstaff”, as well as the Messa da Requiem for Alessandro Manzoni.

Among the rooms recalled are Verdi’s bedroom, where he slept and worked, the study for managing the estate, and the dressing room with a piano with six pedals. The composer also wanted a park with a pond surrounded by swamp cypresses, for which in 1868 he ordered numerous plants from a Milanese firm. After his death in Milan in 1901, the villa passed to the heirs of Maria Filomena Verdi and was opened as a museum, with some rooms on the ground floor and the park.

The villa has been closed to the public since 2022: the heirs could no longer sustain the maintenance costs, and the property was put up for sale. The State has begun the acquisition with the aim of making it a museum; €6.5 million has been allocated for the restoration, but as of September 2026 the works had not yet begun and no reopening date is known.
