About the museum

The museum was inaugurated on 10 October 2009, the anniversary of Giuseppe Verdi's birth, in the Villa Pallavicino in Busseto, a 16th-century summer residence set in a garden outside the historic centre. Previously the villa housed the Museo Civico Verdiano.

In view of the 2013 bicentenary the complex was enlarged into a multidisciplinary centre with a media library and spaces for schools, conservatory students and music enthusiasts. The historical route presents Verdi's 27 operas in about twenty rooms, with reproductions of sketches and original scenes from Casa Ricordi, period paintings from Hayez to Boldini, 19th-century fabrics and music, under a lighting design by the stage designer Pier Luigi Pizzi; the texts on the reading desks are by Philippe Daverio.

The museum has been closed for years because of a dispute between the Comune di Busseto, owner of the villa, and the company that ran the museum. The sources consulted do not give a reopening date.
