About the museum
The collection began while Francesco Baracca was still alive: after the retreat of Caporetto, in 1917, his mother Paolina had many war relics transported to Lugo, often parts of downed aircraft that the pilot had chosen as examples of advanced technology. In 1918 the objects were displayed for the first time, and on 3 October 1924 the Lugo municipal council established the Museo Francesco Baracca, inaugurated on 16 June 1926 in the Rocca Estense in the presence of Umberto of Savoy.
The central piece was the SPAD VII used by the 91st Squadron commanded by Baracca, donated to the city in 1919. In 1993 the museum was moved to the ace’s birthplace, as provided for in the wishes of his father Enrico; in 1997 a Fiat G-91Y of the 8th Wing of Cervia-Pisignano was added.
After closing in 2014 for anti-seismic consolidation, the museum reopened on 23 May 2015 with a new display including a flight simulator, developed within the cross-border project ALISTO, and a section dedicated to the Baldini Collection, a fund of illustrated postcards of the First World War. The route also includes the family burial chapel and the Rambelli monument.
