About the museum
Castel Savoia was built for Queen Margherita, the first queen of Italy, who spent the summer at Gressoney from the end of the 19th century to the early 20th century. King Umberto I had given her the land shortly before he died in the assassination attempt at Monza; the design is by the architect Emilio Stramucci and the building was completed in 1904.
The castle is a residence in local grey stone with five pointed turrets and a semicircular veranda facing the valley. The furnishings and panelling are the work of Michele Dellera, the stained glass and decorations of Carlo Cussetti; Savoy knots and daisies recur on the ceilings and in the window reveals. The ground floor was intended for daytime life, the first floor housed the royal apartments and the top floor the members of the court; the kitchens were separate and connected to the castle by a Decauville railway for transporting dishes.
At the foot of the walls, in a clearing surrounded by conifers and larches, lies the alpine botanical garden created in 1990.
