About the museum
The castle stands on a sandstone ridge between the streams Mordale and Vallone Grande, tributaries of the Biferno, and took the place of an earlier watchtower, probably from the second half of the 12th century, whose perimeter is still visible. The present layout presumably dates from the 13th century, in the Angevin period. On the east façade appears the coat of arms of Paolo di Sangro; in the reception rooms the marriage deed between Altobella di Sangro and Cola di Monforte was signed in 1450.
The building has a square plan with three cylindrical towers at the corners, one of which was rebuilt during the restoration. A moat, now filled with greenery, separated it from the western walls. In the courtyard stands the Fontana dei Fauni, and a system of terracotta gutters channels rainwater into a 120,000-litre cistern that once supplied the whole village.
Declared a national monument in 1979, the castle was bought by the State in 1988 and taken over in 1996. After a long restoration, concluded in the early 2000s, it has been managed since December 2014 by the Ministry of Culture, today through the Regional Directorate of National Museums of Molise. On the first floor follow the stately rooms with coffered ceilings and a kitchen lined with majolica tiles; the furnishings on display are largely not original to the place, but consistent with those that might have been found there.
