About the museum
The castle of Orezia stands on a cliff overlooking Dervio, in the locality of Castello, and was built in the late Middle Ages to bar the road climbing into the Valvarrone. The first mention dates from 1039, when the castle withstood a long siege by the militias of the Tre Pievi lariane (the three pieve of Lake Como). According to other sources the tower is documented with certainty from 1341.
Of the fortified complex, which included houses, a moat and a square, there remains today a well-preserved square tower, flanked by the remains of ancient dwellings that form the hamlet of Castello. In the surroundings, traces of defensive masonry works can still be recognised.
The restoration of the tower and of the nearby church of San Leonardo was completed in 2016. Today the tower can be visited at weekends in the fine season, thanks to the volunteers of the Pro Loco di Dervio.
