About the museum

The museum was founded on the initiative of the Centro Italiano Femminile of Colico, with the aim of preserving and presenting, above all to school groups, rural life between the late 19th century and the first half of the 20th century. In the early 2000s the collection of objects, tools, furniture and linen, often abandoned in attics and cellars, began; the rooms were inaugurated on 20 May 2007, on the feast of the patron saint, San Bernardino.

Since 2010 the Comune di Colico has assigned the museum its current seat, an annex of the former Collegio Sacro Cuore, close to the schools. In the same year it joined the museum system of the Province of Lecco, which also includes other sites in Colico, such as the forts and the Fontanedo tower.

The rooms are spread over two floors and a basement. On the first floor the rooms of the farmhouse are reconstructed, with the large kitchen with fireplace and the bedroom with the wrought-iron bed; in the basement are the tools for wool, sewing, the shoemaker, the carpenter and vine cultivation; the upper floor is dedicated to livestock, milk processing and farm and silvopastoral activities. Today the museum is run by the association Amici del museo della cultura contadina di Colico (Friends of the Museum of Rural Culture of Colico), which promotes ethnographic research, exhibitions and routes around the area.
