About the museum

The museum, known by the acronym MUU, was opened in June 2008 in Vendrogno, in the premises of the former latteria turnaria (communal dairy), renovated the year before. For about a century the building served to collect, process and transform the milk brought every day by the farmers of the village, and it largely retains its original layout.

The permanent exhibition occupies the ground floor and follows the stages of butter and cheese production, from skimming in the ramine (shallow pans) to heating in the cauldron, and on to preservation and maturing. Other rooms tell of the woods, fields and cowshed, the home and women's work, and some episodes of the history of the Muggiasca, including the Resistance. Two rooms also host rotating displays of objects, images and archive documents.

The museum is run by the non-profit association Insieme per il Museo di Vendrogno and since 2010 has been part of the Sistema museale della Provincia di Lecco. In 2020 the Comune of Vendrogno was merged into that of Bellano. Besides its premises, the MUU organises meetings, photo competitions and days in the area, with visits to the small churches and to places of the Muggiasca.
