Opening hoursFree admission
Limited operations. The first and second floors of the castle are being rearranged and will open soon; the ground floor is open with free admission.

About the museum

The castle of Piombino has a history of about eight hundred years and is above all a museum of itself: within a coherent architectural space, the many building phases that developed over the centuries around the original core can be recognised, including the square-based 13th-century tower, the ancient eastern gate of the town, which visitors can admire today in all its imposing presence.

The complex houses the Museo del Castello e delle Ceramiche Medievali, run by the Parchi della Val di Cornia, which tells the story of the fortress and of medieval ceramics. The first and second floors are currently being rearranged and will open to the public soon; in the meantime the ground floor is open, with free guided tours on the history of the castle. Admission is free during this period.

The museum is entered via the Via del Castello entrance and then through the wooden door and the glass door; the entrance from the Stalle napoleoniche (Napoleonic stables) is reserved for people with disabilities, who can telephone to have it opened for them.
