About the museum

The museum occupies some rooms beside the co-cathedral of Sant'Antimo, built in 1377. Visitors enter from the cloister, and the rooms may correspond to the ancient chapter house of the convent of the Augustinian Hermits; the visit completes the route through the church.

The core of the collection is formed by the works of Andrea Guardi, a Florentine sculptor of the 15th century who worked for a long time in Piombino. However, the Appiani sarcophagus and the baptismal font by the same artist remain in the co-cathedral. Alongside these works are furnishings and objects from the same church and from other churches in the area, including those of Suvereto and Populonia.

The route includes marble and wooden sculptures, paintings with altarpieces from Populonia and liturgical objects such as chalices, vestments and antique monstrances. Of particular interest is a fragmentary 15th-century fresco, discovered in 1996, which depicts the Madonna and Child with saints and has been linked to the Madonna di Falesia.
