About the museum
The origins of the castle of Monteroduni are probably Lombard: the town venerates Saint Michael the Archangel, protector of fortified sites. The first documented mention dates from 1193, when the fortress was attacked during the reign of Henry VI. The building was then transformed several times over the centuries.
After 1503 it passed to the d'Afflitto family and later to the Pignatelli della Leonessa, who turned it into a stately residence. Among its most important features are the large hall with a wooden ceiling made of 190 oak panels painted in tempera in the early 18th century, the 18th-century portals in red breccia from the Matese, the 16th-century staircase and a plaque of 1752 listing the tolls due for crossing the river Lorda.
The visit, in timed slots and by booking, takes in rooms such as the hall, the library, the bedroom, the kitchen and the rooms with coats of arms, weapons and objects related to falconry. The castle can be visited together with the Museo antropologico delle eredità (MADE), which holds farm tools, carpenters', blacksmiths' and shoemakers' tools and household objects of rural life, largely from the collection of Antonio Bertone.
