About the museum
The museum is housed in the rooms of the Castello Pandone in Prata Sannita, in the province of Caserta. The first building of the castle and village dates back to the Lombard period; the fortification was consolidated in the Norman age and later extended with cylindrical towers on truncated conical bases. Over the centuries it passed through the hands of the Capuano, Sanframondo, Pandone, Rota and Invitti families, until it came to the Scuncio family, who have been looking after and running it for more than one hundred and fifty years, turning it from a fortress into a residence.
Several museums are set up in the castle rooms: those on the First and Second World Wars, the museum of rural life and the potter's museum. The military history museum is divided into two sections, each dedicated to one world war.
A second room documents how the fighting moved through the Anzio-Nettuno sector and the inland area, from the Barbara Line south of Prata to the Winter Line, which also included Venafro and San Pietro Infine, and to the massive Gustav Line. The latter stretched across Italy from Minturno to Ortona, passing through Cassino, and for five months and four battles halted the Allied advance. The Associazione Castello di Prata Sannita promotes the cultural enhancement of the area.
