About the museum

The Museo nazionale del Paleolitico di Isernia stands at La Pineta, where in 1978, during work on a variant of the Strada statale 85, an important prehistoric site was discovered by chance. The settlement, frequented about 700,000 years ago, has yielded stone tools, animal remains and the fossil of a child about 583,000 years old, attributed to Homo heidelbergensis.

The museum, opened in 1999, is built over the excavated palaeosurface and functions as a permanent laboratory in which the finds are excavated, restored, studied and displayed on site. The route is divided into four sections, dedicated to human evolution, the archaeological surface of Isernia La Pineta, the populations and environments of the site, and prehistory in Molise.

Visitors can use multimedia stations with interviews and reconstructions, and see a replica of an Elephas antiquus and reconstructed huts from the Palaeolithic and Bronze Age. The museum has a second seat in the Santa Maria delle Monache complex in the centre of Isernia. Since 2019 it has been run by the Direzione regionale Musei del Molise of the Ministry of Culture.
