Large-format photographs and a drone video, curated by Angela Madesani, show Mediterranean areas hit by major fires and nature's capacity to regenerate and reclaim the territory.
Five women sculptors present new marble works on the themes of transformation, the relationship with nature and rebirth; on the first floor the works engage with the museum's permanent collection.
About the museum
The museum is housed in the 17th-century San Francesco complex, made up of the church and the attached convent, built by Carlo I Cybo Malaspina, prince of Massa and marquis of Carrara. Over the centuries the convent passed to various religious orders and, in the Napoleonic period, was turned into a sculpture workshop. In 1868 it was handed over to the Comune di Carrara; the most recent restoration work has adapted it as a permanent museum venue.
The museum, formerly known as the Centro Arti Plastiche, belongs to the Comune di Carrara and documents the development of contemporary art through works by Italian and international artists who have worked and exhibited in the city since the second half of the 20th century. Its historic core comes from the international sculpture Biennials, launched in the 1950s: the historic collection brings together works made between 1957 and 1973 and places them in dialogue with the architecture of the cloister.
The contemporary collection gathers works created from the eighth Biennale in 1996 onwards, after a twenty-year pause, while the collection “Disegnare il marmo” comprises forty slabs of white or bardiglio marble, all of the same size, decorated by artists, architects, photographers and designers for an exhibition in 2004–2005. The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions, artist residencies and educational programmes.
