About the museum
The Centro Dantesco dei Frati Minori Conventuali is housed in the Franciscan cloisters next to the basilica of San Francesco, where Dante’s funeral took place in 1321. In 1989, once the consolidation works were complete, a permanent exhibition of the main artworks was set up there, acquired mainly on the occasion of the International Dante Biennials, in particular small bronze sculptures and medals.
In 1997 the museum joined the Sistema Museale provinciale (Provincial Museum System). After restoration of the cloisters it reopened in 2011 and definitively in September 2012, with a route combining tradition and innovation. The north and south wings house facsimile editions of illuminated manuscripts and prints of the “Divina Commedia”, portraits and busts of Dante, medals and small bronzes; the central wing is an educational section designed for young people and schools.
Alongside the museum the Centre looks after a Dante library recognised as being of “exceptional interest”, and carries out research activities, competitions and publications.
