About the museum
The Museo Archeologico di Oria e dei Messapi (M.A.M.), also known as the Centro di documentazione messapica, is housed in Palazzo Martini, a Baroque building of the 18th century in the heart of Oria’s historic centre. The palazzo housed the town hall until 1985 and today it is used for exhibitions and official meetings, as well as being the home of the archaeological collections.
The collections illustrate Messapian civilisation and the history of ancient Hyria. A model reconstructs the city with its main monuments and the acropolis as it appeared in the 4th century BC, when it traded with the Greek world, before Rome brought its independence to an end. One room reconstructs the grave goods of some Messapian burials discovered beneath the Piazza della Cattedrale, next to the palace of a local lord excavated near the present bishop’s palace; the funerary goods from the tombs of the archaeological area in Via Erodoto, in the centre of Oria, are now housed in the museum.
Among the most striking pieces is a mosaic of polychrome pebbles depicting a lion attacking its prey.
