About the museum

The Mostra Storica Arsenale, known as Mo.S.A., opened in 1979 under the name Mostra Storica Artigiana, to celebrate the professional skills of the arsenalotti, the workers of the Arsenal. It is located inside the military maritime Arsenal of Taranto, in one of the first buildings erected in the area, and comprises the exhibition spaces and the Sala a Tracciare.

The exhibition tells the recent history of Taranto and the navy from 1889, the year the Arsenal was established, to the present day. The entrance is marked by a large plaster figurehead depicting the goddess Fortuna and a model of Taranto from 1882, before the Arsenal was built. Among the most important relics are the rudder of the ship Cristoforo Colombo with its carved transom, a “Maiale”, the slow-running torpedo used in the Second World War, and a sheet of metal from the battleship Giulio Cesare, hit in the Battle of Punta Stilo.

The collection includes numerous scale models of sailing ships and modern vessels, many built in the Arsenal, such as Nave Puglia, Nave Quarto, the ferry Messina and a model of the Caio Duilio, as well as industrial heritage machinery of the 20th century, a late Roman–Byzantine anchor and a photographic and technical archive of the Arsenal.
