About the museum
The Museo archeologico provinciale “Francesco Ribezzo” stands in Piazza Duomo, in the historic centre of Brindisi, and is named after the archaeologist and linguist Francesco Ribezzo (1875–1952). It opened in 1958 and holds evidence ranging from prehistory to the Messapian and Roman worlds, and even to underwater archaeology.
The display is organised into several sections: the epigraphic section, with inscriptions in Latin, Greek and Hebrew; the statuary section, with Roman sculptures from the historic centre of the city; the antiquarium, with the Civica–De Leo and Marzano–Gorga collections of Apulian and Attic vases, terracotta carts and coins; the prehistoric finds from the province; the numismatic section, with coins from the Classical, medieval and modern periods; and the section on the Bronzes of Punta del Serrone, bronze statues recovered from the sea off Brindisi, among them those of the consul Lucius Aemilius Paullus and of a togate Roman citizen.
Among the materials on display are also Messapian trozzelle (ceramic vessels), red-figure vases, a gold sheet, a terracotta disc with Eros and large capitals; the underwater section presents amphorae recovered along the Brindisi coast.
