About the museum
The Centro di Scienze Naturali di Galceti stands at the gates of Prato, on the slopes of Monteferrato, in a former Franciscan convent complex. Founded at the end of the 1960s to bring people closer to nature, it is run by the Fondazione Parsec on behalf of the municipality of Prato.
The museum occupies about 750 square metres and houses birds, mammals, fish, reptiles, insects, shells, minerals, rocks, herbaria and archaeological and palaeoethnological finds from the area. Around it extends an environmental park of several hectares, with a pine wood, two small lakes and a network of paths, where animals lived freely and in enclosures, including falcons, herons, peacocks, red deer, fallow deer, wild boar and roe deer. The centre was also involved in the rescue and reintroduction of wild animals.
The centre is currently closed to the public while its spaces are reorganised. The process of recognition as a wildlife sanctuary by the Regione Toscana (Tuscany Region) and the work in the park have delayed the reopening, for which no date has been announced.
