About the museum
The museum is in Figline di Prato, in Via di Cantagallo, and is run by the Fondazione Museo della Deportazione e Resistenza di Prato – Luoghi della Memoria Toscana. It opened in 2002 and tells in particular the story of the Tuscan workers arrested after the general strike of March 1944 and deported to Mauthausen and its sub-camps.
The exhibition route is conceived as a symbolic journey inside a Nazi concentration camp, beginning with the arrest of the workers from Tuscan factories. Some of the objects displayed are original and come from the camps and from the factories set up in the tunnels near Ebensee; others are reconstructions. In 2010 the audiovisual route “Con i miei occhi” (With My Own Eyes) was added, with seven video stations and headphones, devoted to survivors’ testimonies on arrival at the camp, daily life, selections and extermination.
On the first floor is the Documentation Centre, with a specialised library of over 4,000 volumes, three internet stations and a video and lecture room, also used for meetings, presentations and temporary exhibitions. The Foundation’s website also explores the themes of the Shoah, Italian military internment and the Resistance in Tuscany and Prato.
