About the museum
The church of Santa Maria degli Angeli, known as the Santuccio, stands just inside Porta Romana. It was founded between 1320 and 1352 by nuns of the Order of Santa Maria Maddalena who came from Melianda in the Sienese countryside. At the beginning of the fifteenth century the nuns joined the sisters of Santa Maria degli Angeli in Valli.
The nave is a single space, remodelled in the sixteenth century according to the norms of the Counter-Reformation. It holds works by important Sienese artists, including an altarpiece begun by Francesco Vanni in 1610 and the frescoes by Ventura Salimbeni with the stories of San Galgano (1612). The organ, present since 1531 and enlarged in the seventeenth century, is under restoration.
The church played a role in the history of the Palio alla lunga, which started right here. Today it is a cultural site managed by the Musei nazionali di Siena (Pinacoteca nazionale).
