About the museum
The Collection of Physics Instruments is part of the Sistema Museale Universitario Senese (SIMUS) and holds one of the university's most valuable historic collections of scientific instruments. It documents the evolution of physics teaching, from its origins in the faculty of medicine to the research of the Institute of Physics in the 1950s.
The instruments, around 400 and in excellent condition, were donated or purchased between the 19th century and the mid-20th century. Among the most notable pieces are the Zamboni perpetual electric pendulum, the optical instruments of Giovanni Battista Amici, spectrometers, polarimeters, compasses, telescopes and galvanometers, as well as electrical instruments of fine craftsmanship, X-ray tubes and a collection of tubes for studying electrical discharges in gases.
The collection carries out study, research and outreach activities and takes part in the ESCAC project. Visits are free with online ticket booking, while guided tours are requested by email.
