About the museum

The museum is located in via dei Pispini, in the rooms behind the oratory of San Gaetano da Thiene, and holds the most precious historical and artistic possessions of the Contrada del Nicchio. The oratory, in the Baroque style, dates from 1683 and is decorated with frescoes by Giuseppe Nicola and Apollonio Nasini on the life of the saint, accompanied by sculptures by Giacomo Franchini.

From the main entrance you reach the Sala delle Vittorie, where the banners won by the Nicchio since the 18th century are displayed, together with the jackets (giubbetti) and caps (zucchini) of the victorious jockeys between the 19th and 20th centuries, the throne of the Quarantore from the oratory, and the outfits made for the renewal of the costumes in 1955.

On the upper floor are the masgalani, prizes for the best historical procession, the “cavallini”, popular paintings showing the arrival of the races, and the costumes from the renewals of 1904 and 1928, together with 19th-century outfits. Among the works of art stand out a painted terracotta statue of St Sebastian attributed to the workshop of Giovanni di Stefano, a painted cross of the 15th century, a terracotta and stucco bust of Christ the Redeemer, and a canvas of the Madonna and Child with saints.
