About the museum
The museum belongs to the Società di Esecutori di Pie Disposizioni, an ancient Sienese charitable institution descended from a lay confraternity, the Compagnia dei Disciplinati. The works come precisely from the heritage of this confraternity. The museum was inaugurated on 18 September 1938, on the occasion of an exhibition dedicated to Jacopo della Quercia; the Società has been based in Via Roma since 1915.
The rooms occupy the old choir of the nuns, today the General Council Hall, and the former sacristy of the former convent of Santa Maria degli Angeli, the Santuccio. Here a small but very valuable collection of painted panels from the 14th and 15th centuries is displayed, with works attributed to Duccio di Boninsegna and his circle, to Niccolò di Ser Sozzo, Andrea Vanni, Sano di Pietro and Guidoccio Cozzarelli, as well as two frescoes by Rutilio Manetti of 1610 in the sacristy.
The Società also manages the Collezione Bologna Buonsignori, with paintings, bronzes, ivories, silverware, coins and ceramics, and the historic seat under the vaults of the Spedale di Santa Maria della Scala, made available to the Municipality of Siena within the museum circuit since 2000.
