About the museum
The museum is housed in the former oratory of Santa Maria della Giustizia Vecchia, in Via San Procolo, in the historic centre of Verona. It tells the story, traditions, rituals and values of the masks that animate the Bacanal del Gnoco, the Verona carnival, from 1531 onwards.
According to popular tradition, the carnival goes back to the physician Tommaso Da Vico, who in the 16th century is said to have left a provision in his will obliging the distribution of food to the population of the San Zeno district every year. The will, drawn up on 18 May 1531 and kept in the Archivio di Stato di Verona (State Archive of Verona), however contains no trace of this bequest: his only heir is his son Bartolomeo.
The museum, named after Luigi D’Agostino, known as “Ginetto”, is linked to the committee of the Bacanal del Gnoco carnival, whose seat is in nearby Porta San Zeno.
