About the museum
The church was built between 1471 and 1477 at the wish of Giovanni Cinughi, first bishop of Pienza, as a family chapel dedicated to the Madonna delle Nevi. It stands along the route of the ancient Via Francigena in the centre of Siena. The bishop spent his own fortune on the undertaking but did not live to see it finished.
The building is a small Renaissance temple that keeps its original form. The architect is unknown; among the hypotheses is the name of Lorenzo di Pietro, known as Il Vecchietta.
Among the works are the altarpiece with the “Madonna delle Nevi” by Matteo di Giovanni (1477) and the stucco work beside the altar, with figures of Saint Joseph and Saint Mary Magdalene de' Pazzi, attributed to Giuseppe Maria Mazzuoli. The church is managed by the Musei nazionali di Siena.
