About the museum
The museum occupies the former Romanesque church of San Donato, in the complex of the Rocca Salimbeni, the historic seat of the Monte dei Paschi di Siena bank. Deconsecrated at the beginning of the 19th century following the Napoleonic suppressions, the church was then used as a carriage house. In 1925 it was bought by the bank.
In 2011 the spaces were adapted to modern museum standards and a chronological display was created, presenting part of the bank's art collection. The collection is the result of commissions and acquisitions from the 15th century onwards: the first works were ordered to lend prestige to the institution and celebrate its history, such as the fresco of the Madonna della Misericordia commissioned in 1481 from Benvenuto di Giovanni.
The artists represented include Pietro Lorenzetti, Sassetta, Domenico Beccafumi, Francesco Vanni and Amos Cassioli, with works from the 14th to the 19th century.
