About the museum
The museum of the Contrada della Lupa occupies the historic seat of the contrada, a complex begun in the early 16th century and completed about a century later with the frescoes of the oratory and the large chapel. The building belonged to the Compagnia di San Rocco and passed to the contrada at the end of the 18th century, together with the sacred furnishings of the former confraternity.
In the historic seat are the reception hall, the archive and the costume room. In the crypt follow one another the Sala delle Vittorie with the palii won, the Sala dei Paramenti sacri, the Sala delle Armature, the Sala delle Monture, with the contrada's historic costumes from 1839 onwards, and the Sala delle Riunioni, where the masgalani won are displayed.
The oratory holds a cycle of frescoes on the life of Job by Bernardino Mei, Rutilio and Domenico Manetti and Astolfo Petrazzi, while in the nearby large chapel a big fresco by Rutilio Manetti from the early 17th century can be seen. Among the mementos stands out a photograph of Giuseppe Garibaldi with a dedication to the jockey Mario Bernini, winner of the 1867 Palio.
