About the museum
The Stanze della Memoria were inaugurated on 27 January 2007 and retrace the history of Siena and its territory from the beginning of the 20th century to the Liberation, through the years of Fascism, war and the partisan struggle.
The venue is the so-called Casermetta on Via Malavolti, which in 1943-1944 housed the political police of the Italian Social Republic. This link with the events of those years gives the place a particular significance and makes the route an opportunity to reflect on the civic history of the city.
The museum is spread over two floors, with a teaching room and twelve rooms that combine enlarged photographs, information panels, films and spoken narratives. The first floor is devoted to the origins of Fascist squadrism, the establishment of the dictatorship, the building of consensus, the repression of dissent and the racial laws; the second illustrates the main episodes of the war and the struggle for Liberation.
