About the museum
The crypt of Santa Restituta lies beneath the church of the same name, dating from the 17th century, in the Castello district of Cagliari. It is an underground chamber, partly natural and partly excavated by people, originally used as a quarry and later as a place of worship, first pagan and then Christian.
The main chamber, reached by two external staircases, connects to smaller rooms through narrow passages. It preserves a fresco of Saint John the Baptist from the Byzantine-Orthodox tradition (from the 13th century) and a high altar of brick with the statue of the saint. Beneath the altar is a small crypt linked to the supposed column of the martyrdom.
During the bombing in the Second World War the site served as a shelter for the population, as a plaque outside recalls. The relics found at the end of the 1990s are now kept in the church of Sant'Anna and not in the crypt.
