About the museum

The museum was set up in 1985, after an exhibition held in 1984 for the centenary of the railways in Sardinia, with the aim of preserving the industrial-archaeological evidence of the Ferrovie Reali Sarde (Sardinian Royal Railways) and of the lines operated under concession (“concesse”). It is located inside Cagliari railway station, with entrance from via Sassari, and is run by the association Sardegna Vapore.

The island’s railway history begins in 1863 with the founding of the Compagnia Reale delle Ferrovie Sarde. Between 1864 and 1883 a standard-gauge line of about 400 km was built to a design by the engineer Benjamin Piercy, followed between 1886 and 1897 by complementary narrow-gauge lines.

The collection comprises over a hundred items: period photographs, a telegraph of the Royal Railways, machinery and pieces of track, a model of the ferry Gennargentu, ticket-office fittings, lamps, clocks, tools and safes, the former DCO (operations control post) of Chilivani, and a saloon of the Sardinian royal train with the low armchairs built for Victor Emmanuel III. In the station concourse the steam locomotive D 744.003 is displayed, the only surviving example of its series.
