About the museum
The collection originates from the donation of Stefano Cardu (Cagliari 1849 – Rome 1933), who had worked in Bangkok as a designer and builder and who bequeathed to his city the works he had gathered during his years in Siam. The museum was opened to the public in 1918 in the Palazzo civico Ottone Bacaredda.
During the Second World War the pieces were sheltered in the caves of the Giardini Pubblici. After the war the collection was housed in the Galleria Comunale d'Arte, where it remained until 1981, before being moved to its present location, the Cittadella dei Musei, in Piazza Arsenale.
The museum holds over 1,300 objects dating from the 14th to the 19th century, from Siam, Southeast Asia, Japan, China and India: sculptures, silverware, porcelain, weapons, manuscripts and tempera paintings. According to the museum's website, its Siamese art collection is considered the largest of its kind in Europe.
