About the museum
The museum is housed in the former sugar factory of Classe, on the southern outskirts of Ravenna, an industrial building converted and opened to the public in 2018. It forms part of the Parco archeologico di Classe, together with the Basilica of Sant'Apollinare in Classe and the area of the Antico Porto.
The exhibition occupies about 2,600 square metres and tells the story of Ravenna and Classe through archaeological finds, from the Etruscan-Umbrian origins through the Roman, Gothic, Byzantine and early medieval periods. The materials are presented together with modern technological aids, such as multimedia panels, installations and videos.
Around the building extends a park of about one and a half hectares, always open to the public. The museum is run by Ravenna Antica, the foundation that looks after the archaeological park.
