About the museum

The collection was officially established in 1983 under the name Raccolta Museale “G. Ciamician”, after the recovery and restoration of material dispersed in the storerooms of the former Institute of Chemistry named after Giacomo Ciamician, a chemist at the University of Bologna. It now forms part of the Sistema Museale di Ateneo of the University of Bologna and is based in Via Selmi.

The instruments used for scientific research date from the last decade of the 19th century and include polarimeters, spectroscopes, muffle furnaces, apparatus for elemental analysis, polarographs and balances. An important part of the teaching instruments consists of Crookes tubes for the emission of cathode rays, alongside numerous models of colorimeters, photometers, galvanometers, pH meters and induction coils.

The collection does not aim at the number of pieces on display, but intends to present to visitors a brief history of the Bologna school of chemistry, highlighting the lines of research that succeeded one another over time.
