About the museum
The collection is linked to the history of the Chair of Mineralogy of the University of Bologna, established in 1860. Luigi Bombicci Porta, a native of Siena, was appointed professor the same year and took over its direction in 1862 at Palazzo Poggi.
Under his guidance the holdings grew from about 9,000 specimens of minerals and rocks in 1862 to about 48,000 in 1901. The present building, constructed on his initiative, was completed in 1907, four years after the death of its founder.
The collection is open to the public with reduced hours and only at certain times of the year; on closing days guided tours, workshops and events are sometimes held.
