About the museum
The Collezione Francesco De Rocchi is dedicated to the painter Francesco De Rocchi (1902–1978) from Saronno, one of the leading figures of Lombard Chiarismo. The exhibition core, opened on 2 June 2003 as the Atelier De Rocchi, has been enriched over the years by new donations to the municipality, including two oil paintings on panel from 1952 and 1960, which entered the collection in 2020.
The collection is housed in Villa Gianetti, a building from 1919–1920 that for a long time was the seat of the Saronno town hall. In April 2021 the municipal council established the museum collection “Villa Gianetti – Un salotto a Saronno”, which brings together two routes: the one on De Rocchi, with around fifteen works and various autograph drawings, and the one dedicated to the 19th-century opera singer Giuditta Pasta, born in Saronno, with about 667 pieces donated by the Milanese collector Giorgio Cavallari.
The villa also houses the Centro studi sul Chiarismo, which organises courses, meetings and guided tours and collaborates on the collection's initiatives.
