About the museum
The Museo di Siolo, whose official name is Mostra permanente degli attrezzi della vita contadina e delle fornaci (Permanent Exhibition of Tools of Rural Life and Kilns), is housed in restored rooms of the Cascina Siolo, in Piazza del Lavatoio, in Garbagnate Milanese. It is owned by the municipality and was inaugurated on 25 April 1999.
The collection preserves tools of the material and rural culture of Garbagnate and the Alto Milanese between the 19th and 20th centuries. The sections are dedicated to work in the fields, silkworm rearing, the farmhouse, the courtyard, the threshing floor and the cowshed, and the kilns. Since 2019 the museum has been linked to the Museo diffuso, a platform with augmented reality applications and the Archivio della memoria della città (Archive of the City's Memory).
Since 2015 the opening, maintenance and organisation of guided visits have been entrusted to the volunteers of the association A.Mu.Si. (Amici del Museo di Siolo, Friends of the Museo di Siolo), who offer initiatives for all ages, with particular attention to schools and families. Each year more than 600 pupils from the city's schools visit the museum.
