About the museum
The site preserves the underground part of the church of Sant'Anastasio, which stood near the Roman forum of Hasta along the present Corso Alfieri. According to tradition, a first basilica dates back to the Lombard period; in the Carolingian age it was replaced by a Romanesque church, already linked to a women's monastery attested from the 11th century.
The monastery was suppressed in the Napoleonic period, and in 1907 the buildings above ground were demolished to make way for the liceo classico (classical secondary school). Only the crypt survived: it has a basilica plan with three small naves and cross vaults. The first bays are the oldest and reuse Roman and early medieval materials, while the eastern part is the result of a later extension.
The visit route includes the remains of the oldest phases of the city: traces of the paving of the Roman forum, early medieval structures and Lombard burials dating from the late 7th to the late 8th century. The stone museum displays carved capitals, slabs and architectural fragments from churches and palaces of Asti, including a room with the coats of arms of noble families. The site is part of the circuit of the museums of the Fondazione Asti Musei.
